Combining controlled crystallization with chemical strengthening through ion-exchange offers a promising strategy for producing high-strength optical glass substrates. In this talk, this approach is applied to soda-lime silicate glass, the most widely used commercial glass system, and lithium disilicate glass, which can be crystallized at relatively low processing temperatures. In both systems, transparent glass-ceramics were produced from the parent glasses by carefully controlling the nucleation and growth conditions. Subsequent ion-exchange occurred primarily within the residual glassy phase, while the crystalline phases hindered ion diffusion and reduced the penetration depth. Despite this limitation, increasing crystallinity improved hardness and crack resistance while preserving optical transparency. These findings demonstrate that coordinated control of crystallization and ion-exchange conditions provides an effective route for developing transparent glass-ceramics with balanced mechanical and optical performance.
